Denton Gardening Club Open Show
The 2026 Open Summer Show
This year's Show will be held on Saturday 5th September at the Village Hall.

The show is open everyone, not just members of the Club.
In the usual Denton spirit, it is the taking part that is important, not the winning. There is a special class for "gentlemen".
Children are encouraged to enter and are awarded points for entering. There is a prize for the child with the most points overall.
The classes that you can enter appear in the schedule below.

The Schedule
FLOWER CLASSES (Grant Trophy)
(Exhibitors are asked to supply their own simple containers)
- 3 Dahlias, single variety
- 3 Dahlias, mixed varieties
- Jug of Roses, mixed or one variety
- 1 Perfect Rose
- 1 Rose to be judged on scent
- Vase of any Shrub in flower (one variety)
- Vase of mixed Foliage, maximum of 4 varieties
- Vase of Perennials
- Jug of Herbs
- Hedgerow Vase
- A houseplant to be judged on its foliage
- Vase of Grasses, mixed or single variety
- Vase of,Cosmos mixed or single variety
VEGETABLE AND FRUIT CLASSES (Skinner Trophy)
(Paper plates will be available for staging but are not compulsory)
- 5 Potatoes, one variety
- 3 Beetroot
- 3 Carrots
- 3 Onions
- A comedy vegetable (misshapen)
- 6 Runner Beans
- 6 French Beans
- 7 Cherry Tomatoes
- 5 Tomatoes, not cherry
- 3 Courgettes
- 5 Apples, any single variety eating or cooking types
- 5 Plums, one variety
- Plate of Summer Fruit, not apples or plums
- Sunday Lunch: A Box (max size 10” x 15”) of produce not exceeding 5 varieties.
One variety may be fruit. - Salad Box, (max 10” x 15”) not exceeding 5 varieties
- Any Vegetable not in the schedule
- 3 Tomatoes (washed) – on a plate – unnamed until after judging.

DOMESTIC CLASSES (Carden Trophy)
(Paper Plates will be provided for staging)
- Banana Bread cooked in a loaf tin
- 5 Fruit Muffins
- Bakewell Tart, not less than 8 inches diameter
- 3 White Bread Rolls
- 5 Oat Cookies
- 4 Savoury Scones
- Jar of Jam
- A jar of Pickle
- Jar of Chutney
- 6 Eggs
- Gentlemen's Class – Marmalade Cake - Recipe Provided
DECORATIVE CLASSES (Charnick Trophy)
Flowers may be purchased for classes 42-44.
Entries for classes 45-53 must be items not entered in previous shows. No Oasis to be used.
- Table centre arrangement to be viewed from all sides. Max diameter 20cm.
- An arrangement in a stemmed wine glass.
- A tied posy – suitable for a young flower girl.
- Photograph – a local landscape with human or animal interest.
- Photograph – a portrait featuring different generations – human or animal.
- Photograph – an interesting local building.
- Painting – Painting – Garden view from a window.
- Drawing using Pencil, Pen and Ink, Pastel or Charcoal, of garden tool(s).
- A hand-decorated plant pot. Max height 15cm. Max diameter 15cm.
- A knitted or crocheted triangular scarf – no bigger than 120cm x 50cm.
- A patchwork or appliqued table runner.
- A hand-made candle holder to be displayed with candle.
The “Sandie Jones Trophy” will be awarded for the best Individual Flower in any class (not Decorative Class).
REGULATIONS FOR ENTRANTS
All classes are open to anyone eligible for the class. All entries must be the produce of the exhibitor, excluding decorative classes where flowers may be bought for the flower arranging classes.
The decision of the judges is final. The committee, in consultation with the judges, may withhold any points in any class and award points at their discretion.
Entry Fees
The entry fee is 10p per class.
Trophies
Trophies will be awarded to the Club member with the most points in each category.
The overall Show Trophy will be presented to the entrant with the highest total points.

2nd 6 points
3rd 4 points
One point will also be awarded for each class entered.
Entry forms, completed and accompanied by the total entrance fee, can be handed in to committee members in advance. Entries will also be accepted on the morning of the show.
All entries must be staged ready for the judges between 9.00 a.m. and 11.45 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Doors will close between 12 noon and 2.00 p.m. for judging.
Doors open to the public at 2.00p.m. Teas will be served.
Entrants who do not wish their produce to be auctioned at approx. 3.15pm will be asked to remove it before the auction. Please DO NOT remove them until requested.
