Local Government
And not so local – see below.
A three-tier system of local government operates in Norfolk. However, the Goverment have announced some major changes.
First, Norfolk and Suffolk are to be merged with an elected Mayor with wide ranging responsibilites. Elections for this position are to be held in May 2026.
Next, the current County and District Councils are to be scrapped and replaced with new Unitary Authorities. What these will look like in Norfolk has yet to be decided.
We could have one, two or even three such councils to cover the County. Elections for these new Authorities will probably be held in May 2027.
It is hoped that at least the current structure of Parish and Town Councils will continue.
The current three tiers are:
- Denton Parish Council
-
The Parish Council
What it does. Who is on it. When they meet. What they discuss.
- South Norfolk District Council
-
The District Council
Responsible for: Planning and Development Control, Housing, Environmental Health, Waste Collection & Recycling, Economic Development and Leisure.

- Norfolk County Council
-
The County Council
Responsible for: Education, Social Services, Highways & Transportation, Waste Disposal, Libraries & Museums, Fire Service and Trading Standards.
