Yesterday’s Annual Open Show, organised by Denton Gardening Club, was a great success with some wonderful exhibits and close competition. However, checking the score-sheet afterwords produced a small change to the results.
More than 60 members and guests of the Black Hand Cyder Society turned up for the Club's annual Boules Championships held at the Darrow Green Road Bouledrome, courtesy of Adele and David Godsmark, yesterday.
This was an afternoon rather than an evening session, so it was cakes rather than barbecue, but a great time was had by all. Matches, on a knock-out basis, were closely contested, but the winning team, "Sticky One Styll", repeated their triumph of last year.
Further details, and photographs, can be seen on the
Boules Page.
Denton played its part in today's celebrations of the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, the end of the Second World War.
More than thirty local residents attended the ceremony on the Playing Field to unveil a Plaque next to a tree, a Black Poplar, planted on the North side of the field.
This tree had originally been planted back in 1995 to commemorate the part played by soldiers from this parish in the war against Japan.
Johnnie Carslake, along with Peter Grant and Terry Hanner, had retrieved the original Plaque and made a new, shiny metal replacement.
The ceremony included readings and a dedication from Rev’d Chris Hutton. Everyone there recognised the great sacrifices made by those involved in the conflict, many of whom did not return.
What a fascinating story. Attendees at Tuesday’s Denton WI meeting, including guests, were privileged to hear a detailed account of one person’s involvement with that memorable event in New Yark on the 11th September 2001.
Most people can remember where they were on that fateful day but, our speaker, Janice Brooks, was actually working in one of the Trade Centre buildings. She told us how confused everybody was. She was working in the second Tower to be attacked by the terrorists but was not aware of the first impact. Her story of escaping the building, then leaving her own home and, eventually, reaching a friend’s residence, was really amazing.
