The Slavery Link

2020 saw a massive world-wide campaign about racism. Triggered by the shooting of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, by police in Minneapolis, USA in May, it generated the Black Lives Matter campaign. This was followed by all kinds of protest activity in the UK and elsewhere.

One of the direct, and welcome, benefits was a re-opening of interest in Britain's historical involvement in the Slave Trade and the links with slave-owning in the West Indies.

However, one unexpected development in June was the emergence of a direct link between such activities and Denton. This involved Rev George Sanby the son of one of Denton's Rectors, also called George, who turned out to have benefitted from the compensation paid to slave-owners when the practice was abolished..

Further details were recorded in a June News item - "Slavery in Denton?".
