Ladies' Tractor Road Run

Several Ladies from Denton will be taking part in the Ladies' Tractor Road Run on Sunday 2nd July. The run is in aid of Cancer Research UK (Breast Cancer Awareness). The run starts and ends at Airfield Farm, Topcroft and passes through Starston, Harleston, Gawdy Hall (for lunch) and Alburgh. But this year the route for the run actually passes through Denton as well between approximately 3pm and 4pm. The tractors will pass through Wash Lane, Paynes Hill, Chapel Hill and Norwich Road. So please show your support as they pass through.

Denton Parish Council June News

Our AGM took place on 9th May. Mr. Eddie Winter was elected as Chairman and Mrs Jo Wright Vice Chairman. The chosen representatives are as follows:

The accounts for the year had been circulated and were agreed.

After the AGM our parish council meeting took place. Our District Councillor, Dr. Murray Gray and five members of the public were in attendance. The Fundraising Day that was held on Easter Saturday raised £180 which will go towards the playing field. Awards For All have agreed that we can spend the surplus £300 (duplicated by Youth Bank) on the purchase of two seven-a-side football goal posts. The base for the new shelter will be started fairly soon. Our Composting Scheme will be visited on the 10th May by Recycling Officers from all over Norfolk. A new fence panel and gate have been built and the centre is now screened from the road. The finished compost is for sale and will be sold at the weekly produce market. We hope that the Van in the Village will be coming to Denton either late May or June. It will park at the Playing Field once a week for six weeks and will be for the youngsters of the village where they can go and meet a team of people who can listen and give advice.

It was reported that there are a number of pot holes in Denton which need attention. The Clerk will advise Highways. The Village Sign also needs attention and this will be repainted shortly. Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 13th June at 8pm. Everybody welcome.

Denton Playing Field Fundraising News

Thank you for your support for our fundraising day which raised £180 to help with Parish Council plans to update and improve the playing field. Jasmine Symonds has been granted a further £300 from Youth Bank, Norfolk; we have lottery funding of £1500 and we have set aside £500 from recycling credits. We are committed to providing a multi-purpose shelter and two seven-a-side goalposts but would welcome any other ideas or suggestions. Please contact Jo (788324) or come along to the next Parish Council meeting on 13th June.

Denton Community Car Scheme

Would you be interested in becoming a member of a volunteer community car scheme to help with emergency visits to doctors' surgeries or fetching prescriptions? Following the closure of the Denton and Alburgh Community Bus the Borderhoppa bus service which operates in the Waveney Valley has been extended to cover our area. However the Borderhoppa has to be booked up to 48 hours in advance, so it has been suggested that we might set up a car scheme to cover emergency medical visits only.

At the moment, this scheme would cover visits to Bungay or Harleston, but could perhaps be extended in the future if successful. Several residents have already offered to put their names down on the list. The idea is that anyone needing transport for an emergency visit rings up one of the volunteers to ask for help. Five people have already volunteered. Please ring Anne on 788279 or Jo on 788324 if you wish your name to be added. The more people that join in the more effective the service and the lighter the load for everyone. Full details about the scheme will be circulated as soon as it starts operating but Anne or Jo are happy to handle any queries.

...and more about the Borderhoppa

Of course the propsed scheme is only a back-up for the excellent Borderhoppa bu service which we hope residents will use on a regular basis. It offers a door to door service when booked 48 hours in advance. To use the service, you first need to become a member at an annual cost of £7 per family. After 1st April travel will be free for all passengers over 60 years of age.

Leaflets and further information about the service are available in the Post Office. The number to ring to join the scheme and book your journey is 01379 854800.

Denton Gardening Club May Report

On Wednesday March 20th we visited Highway Nurseries at Framingham Pigot. We had a talk on planting hanging baskets, which plants and colour combinations to use, followed by a stroll around the shopping area. After the visit about 30 members enjoyed a roast dinner at the Framingahm Dove.

THe 18th April saw our last indoor meeting of the season at Denton Village Hall. A talk and slide show on fuchsia growing and showing was given by Frank Lambert.

Frank has been growing fuchsias to show for 10 years and has won many prizes, including best in show, at prestigious shows around the country. His talk was full of valuable tips for the garden growing, as well as showing, of fuchsias. The main lesson was that it doesn't matter which compost you use it is what you choose to feed them on. Other tips on his compost make up, cheap propagators you can easily make from recycled items, best fertilisers and feeds, most effective pest control, taking correct cuttings and nipping out for good growth and shape were just some of the expert tips we can take to use in our own garden. Red spider mite are the worst pests and hard to eradicate as all the best sprays have been taken off the market.

His slide show was full of incredible plants which gave a very different impression about fuchsias and showed what amazing results can be achieved with care and attention. It can take two hours to 'dress' a fuchsia for exhibition to make sure all the blooms are in the right place. It will be interesting to see if our Autumn Show, class 11 - Fuchsia in a Pot, shows who was paying attention and put into practice all the good tips.

The next meeting is our first outdoor gathering on Tuesday May 16th at Chapel Hill Farm, Denton at 7:00p.m. Tim and Hilda Thomas will welcome us to their garden which is at its best in springtime and combines a beautiful setting with natural areas.

Schedules are now available for the Autumn Show which will be on Saturday 16th September. If you haven't entered before please get a schedule and see that there is something for everyone to have a go at.

Looking ahead it is the 10th Anniversary of the club this year. It has been decided to have a dinner, which will be held on 19th December at Denton Village Hall. Put this not to be missed event in your diaries now. Photos of the last 10 years will be put into a presentation by James Godsmark, who would welcome any photos you have that he could copy.
