Denton Parish Council July News

The Chairman welcomed Dr. Murray Gray and four members of the public to the meeting. The composting collection is well underway with almost 5 tonnes collected already. Three more bins are to be built to accommodate this summer's load. Our Composting Scheme has become quite famous with Recycling Officers from all over Norfolk visiting in May and Liz Cargill giving various talks about the Scheme, the last being at the North Norfolk Forum. The Chairman thanked Liz for her hard work and Jo for the continual use of the site.

The Councillors agreed to meet up one evening at the end of June to clean and maintain the Play Area and the seats in the Millennium Wood. The recent visit to Denton from the Highways has resulted in a promise that most of the problems will be carried out in the next few months and the remainder will be scheduled in for next year. However, the Councillors were greatly disappointed that once again Denton has been denied a speed limit. It was agreed that if we could not have a speed limit something needed to be done to stop people driving too fast through the village. After some discussion it was decided to ask for a flashing ‘slow down’ sign, these can be very effective. We had received a letter from the Local Crime Community Sentence Group asking the Parish Council if they would like a presentation which involves a Magistrate and Probation Officer discussing real life case studies showing how sentencing works and what options are available to those who pass sentence. We also had a letter from the Energy Saving Trust who also would like to give a presentation on reducing carbon emissions and, most importantly, how to save money on fuel bills. The Councillors thought both presentations sounded very interesting. We therefore plan to ask both parties to come along in the autumn to give a presentation to the public. Further news on this later on in the year. Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 11th July at 8pm - please come along.

Denton Gardening Club July Report

Hilda and Tim Thomas opened their garden at Chapel Hill Farm for our May meeting, and we all admired their beautiful spring garden. The tunnel was already full of tomatoes and cucumbers and loads of plants ready for planting out. And what an amazing amount of wonderful looking new potatoes just waiting to be dug! Thank you to them both for a most convivial evening and refreshments, which were enjoyed by an excellent turnout of members.

Our June visit was to Corner Cottage, Gislingham. Numbers were well down (possibly due to England playing on the World Cup the same evening?), but fourteen stalwart members enjoyed a delightful garden made over the last seventeen years by Pauline and Trevor Cox, with wonderful herbaceous borders, landscaped pond area and vegetable garden.

Our July meeting is a visit to Mickfield Water Garden near Debenham in Suffolk. Meet at Denton Village Hall at 6.15pm

Don't forget the Autumn Show is now on 16th September. Schedules available from Janet (788207) or Anne (788279).

Heritage Tree Project

Norfolk and Suffolk Councils and the UEA are organising a Heritage Tree Survey across the two counties. I am surveying the parish of Denton to record any “Heritage Trees”. The type of things they are looking for are old or ancient trees, or trees that are not necessarily hundreds of years old but that have been planted in more recent times to commemorate a certain event or trees that have folklore or interesting stories attached to them.

In 1998 I surveyed the Parish for the Ancient Tree Project so I think that type of tree will already be covered. So far, I have only come up with two different trees. So, if anyone knows of any others that could be included, please could you let me know.
