Denton Gardening Club - Draft Schedule Autumn/Winter 2006/2007

The schedule is coming on well and here is a taste of what to expect! Full schedules will be available in September.

September 16th Open Summer Show at Denton Village Hall

A chance for everyone - including members friends and villagers, to enter something and to fill the village hall with wonderful flowers, produce and cooking. The schedule of classes is available here - Schedule or from Anne Carden (788279) or Janet Skinner (788207). Entries can be staged between 9:30 and 12:00. After the hall is closed for judging we will open again to visitors with teas, raffle and an auction late afternoon. If every member entered at least a couple of things - what a display we would have.

October 17th Ben Potterton - THe magic of a garden in October

Just when you think the season is coming to an end Ben will show us what treasures can be found late in the season by raiding his garden and sharing his favourites with us to help us to plan for late colour in our own gardens.

November 21st Allen Barson - getting to grips with pruning to get the best from your garden

Allen will give us a practical demonstration on pruning in the flower garden. Those who did his practical pruning day on apple trees last year were very impressed and this evening should help us get the most out of our ornamental shrubs and trees.

December 19th 10th Anniversary Celebration Dinner

To celebrate our tenth anniversary we will be holding a special dinner at Denton Village Hall. We hope to have slides depicting our outings and exploits over the last ten years. More details at the October meeting but book the date in your diary now! (The cataring is already booked!)

January 16th A life in ponds - Ron Phillips

Our very own Ronnie will talk us through his experience as a professional pond maker and share his trade secrets with us.

February 20th to be confirmed

March 20th Forsythia - Vida Armstrong

Vida is a retired lecturer in horticulture and holds a national collection of Forsythia. She will share her love of this golden beauty and hopefully bring us lots of examples to enjoy. She will also touch on how to start a national collection.

April 17th Janet and Maurice Elliot - Gardening with Herbs

Those who visited the Elliots at their home at Barsham a few years ago will remember a compact garden bursting with an astonishing range of plants including herbs from all over the world. The Elliots will be sharing their love and extensive knowledge of herbs and their tips for getting the most out of them.

May 2007 summer programme starts

As usual this will be a mixture of visits to members' gardens and to nurseries and gardens open to the public.

Denton Parish Council August News

Some of our Councillors had an evening at the Playing Field in June to weed, clean and maintain the equipment. This has smartened up the area although there are still some maintenance jobs to be done. A notice will be put up in the recycling area asking people to keep the area tidy and to take home their plastic bags. We will shortly be having another recycling bin at the mini-recycling centre from Scope. This bin will take clothing and textiles which will be sold in Britain or exported to Africa and Eastern Europe. The rest will go to industry for industrial wipes or flocked and used in car dashboards. The proceeds will go to help those people suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

Liz Cargill reported that compost collections are fairly heavy at the moment, and volunteers are still needed to help with sifting, sorting, etc. The Van in the Village has been coming to Denton every Tuesday for the last three weeks and has been well attended by the teenagers of the village. As yet we do not know how long the van will continue to come.

Our village sign has been taken down for maintenance but we have discovered a large crack through the middle and we are considering replacing the sign for a new one. If you have any thoughts/ideas on this matter let us know. A lot of our street name plates are in very bad repair and it is hard to read them. The Clerk has spoken to South Norfolk District Council about his and new name plates will be installed by the end of August.

It was proposed and unanimously agreed to present St. Mary's Church with an annual donation of £150. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday September 12th at 8pm in the Village Hall, please come along.

St. Mary's Working Party

A working party will be held on Saturday 5th August from 10:00-12:00. Please come and help keep our churchyard neat and tidy. All are welcome.
