These are the critical dates for the 2008 production:

News from the Hall

We are planning to carry out improvements to Denton Village Hall later this summer. We are proposing the following improvements:

We have applied for grant aid from the Norfolk Rural Community Council, South Norfolk Council, Waste Recycling Environmental Limited and Awards for All (The Big Lottery). At the present time the Norfolk Rural Community Council has confirmed funding of £5000 and Denton Parish Council have pledged their support and made a donation of £200. The total estimated cost of the improvements is £24500. If you would like to know more about our plans please phone David on 788352.

We have also recently taken ownership of the former Community Bus garage from Norfolk County Council following their decision to dispose of the bus. The garage is located on the Hall plot but was let to the Council at a peppercorn rent. In the short term the garage will provide us with additional storage but in the longer term it will give us the opportunity to extend the Hall to the south.

Summer Ball

Following the success of last year's summer event we will be holding another summer party this year on the evening of Saturday 7th July. There will be a James Bond theme "Shaken not stirred" and the ticket price of £10 will include a cocktail on arrival as well as a slap up meal and live band "Three Up, Two Down". Tickets from Kath (788414). In the early part of the evening you will have the opportunity for some ballroom dancing. If you would like the opportunity to either learn to ballroom dance or to brush up your dancing skills, Peter & Denise will be running dancing sessions every Friday night at the Hall at 8.45pm in the run up to 07,07,07

Denton Parish Council June Report

At our Annual General Meeting on May 8th the Chairman welcomed Murray Gray and congratulated him on his success at the elections and welcomed the members of the public. He also welcomed Martin Sida-Page onto the Parish Council. Roger Gibson and Adrian Hipwell were co-opted onto the Parish Council. Liz Cargill was elected as Chairman and Terry Hanner elected as Vice Chairman. The accounts for the year ending 31st March 2007 were circulated and agreed.

We then went on to our normal monthly meeting. A Training Day had taken place at the Composting Site for those volunteers that wish to use the shredder. We were informed by the Footpaths Officer at Norfolk County Council that the stiles on the Walk will be replaced with rambler gates and we hope that these will be easier to use than the stiles that are there at the moment.

As a result of the recent survey on a community wind turbine and solar panels we have arranged a meeting on the 30th May to further discuss cost, installation and grants for solar panels. However with regard to the wind turbine it has been decided that for the time being Denton Parish Council will put this project on hold as there seems to be a very limited amount of information available at the moment.

Information regarding Norwich City's bid for unitary status is being circulated to all our Councillors and will be discussed at our next meeting. £1895 was paid to Hempnall Lawn Mowers for the shredder. £200 was paid to Easton College for training to use the shredder. £372.30 was paid to Allianz Cornhill for the insurance premium, £20 subscription to Norfolk Playing Fields Association and £58.75 to the Audit Commission for the annual audit fee.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 12th June at 8pm - everybody welcome.

I think we can safely say that it was with regret that councillors accepted the resignation of Mr Edwin Winter as chairman of Denton Parish Council. Eddie has been a member of the parish council since his election in May 1976 and has served as chairman for 23 of the past 31 years. He has been involved with several major issues during this time such as the proposal for a landfill site at Hardwick, the establishment of the nursery unit for Alburgh with Denton V.C. School and more recently, the illegal caravan site in Middle Road. Eddie has worked tirelessly to ensure such issues are settled fairly and to the satisfaction of all. As chairman he has given his time to attend outside meetings, correspond when necessary as well as conducting the monthly meetings and following up on the decisions taken. On behalf of the parish council I would like to thank Eddie for his commitment, hard work and dedication.

Thank you, Mr Chairman.

Liz Cargill, Chairman

Denton Gardening Club June Report

After a dreary drizzly day the weather cleared to give a fine evening and even a bit of sunshine which made Tricia and Richard's lovely garden even more appealing. An interesting water feature beside the patio gave way to a long spacious lawn with a wide herbaceous border containing a wealth of interesting plants and mature trees. After wandering round, amid much chat, coffee and cake were much appreciated and ended a very pleasent evening. Thank you Tricia and Richard.

The next meeting on 19th June will be a visit to Sally and John Barber's garden at Street Farm, Denton from 7.30.

Denton Parish Council May Report

The Chairman welcomed two members of the public and our Districe Councillor, Murray Gray, to the April meeting. We were delighted to learn that we had received £1404.58 grant from Norfolk Rural Communities Council which will be used to help pay for a new shredder for the Composting Scheme and training for those people that will use it.

It was agreed that it would be useful to have a bicycle rack in the village and after some discussion it was suggested that, with the permission of the Village Hall Committee, the best place for it would be the village hall car park. This will enable people to cycle to the village hall or the playing field and know that they can leave their bikes safely locked up.

The results of the wind turbine and solar panel survey: 88 surveys were returned, 17 people said no to a wind turbine. 47 people said they were interested in having solar panels and out of those 30 were interested in learning how to install their own panels. As a result of this survey, Denton Parish Council will make further investigations into a community wind turbine. We are making arrangements to have solar panel suppliers come to the Village Hall to meet with those people that were interested in installing them. This will be sometime in May and once we know the exace date we will inform all those people that showed an interest.

We were sorry to hear that Jo Wright and Malcolm Skinner would not be standing as Councillors this time. The Chairman thanked Jo and Malcolm for all the hard work that they had put in over the years. They will be greatly missed. We were pleased to hear that Martin Sida-Page has been nominated as a Councillor and look forward to seeing him at our next meeting. This will still leave one vacancy and the Parish Council will need to co-opt somebody to make up its required seven Councillors.

The Clerk read out a letter from the Village Hall Committee explaining that they propose to refurbish the kitchen and the bar area in the Village Hall. The Parish Council fully supports them and agreed to donate £200 towards the refurbishment.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8th May. We start with the AGM at 7.30pm, followed by our normal meeting at 8pm - everybody welcome

Pauline Sandell - Clerk

Denton Gardening Club May Report

Once again we had an excellent meeting on Tuesday 17th April for our talk on herbs by Maurice and Janet Elliot. We were joined by a group from Bedingham who hopefully, if they enjoyed it will come again. I am sure they must have enjoyed the evening, I personally was far from disappointed. I had been looking forward to this talk in particular and it went beyond my expectations! Janet and Maurice Elliot were keen to point out that they were amateurs and not professionals however their talk was very professional!

They started by explaining the various uses of herbs to mankind way back from Roman Times and how they were introduced here in Britain by the Romans and then the Saxons. They brought along a large collection of plants all of which were very unusual. They actually have the largest collection in the UK of Plectranthus which are used in antibiotics and for research. They proceeded to give us some idea of what each plant could be used for both medicinally and culinary - most of them were from abroad. One of the plants which will probably be of use to all of us in later years - if not now! - was Centella asiatica (I had to ask Janet to spell that for me). This is fantastic for arthritis and thinning the blood. Others were Tea Tree from Australia, also from Australia was Mint Bush which the Aborigines use for headaches and colds. Pelogonium was used by the Victorians in cooking as was Angelica. Another was a type of Delphinium which was used for head lice! There were many more and all fascinating.

Maurice went on to say how lucjy they were in the place they lived as it enabled them to experiment with various species. In all it was a very entertaining evening by this - and I'm sure they won't mind me saying this - very informative double act!

Next month sees the start of our Summer Season - starting with an evening visit to Trunch House to explore Richard and Trish Gregory's garden. We will be meeting at Trunch House at 7.15pm on Tuesday 15th May. Any newcomers will be most welcome - a great way to start the summer and find which treats are in store for the rest of the summer!
