Waste & Recycling
Recycling & Rubbish Collection
All homes in Denton have two bins provided by South Norfolk District Council. The green recycling bin is collected one week and the grey rubbish bin the next, in an alternate weekly cycle. At the start of the scheme the normal collection day for most of Denton was a Monday (or, following a Bank Holiday, a Tuesday) but in July 2011 this was changed to Fridays. Full details of collection times and what to put in which bin can be found on the South Norfolk District Council's Website
Mini Recycling Centre
Denton has a Mini Recycling Centre to be found in the car park adjoining the playing field. This centre currently takes glass (any colour - sorting is no longer required), as this cannot be placed in your green bin, and clothing.
Recycling
Denton had its own paper recyling scheme for many years before the general service was set up by the district council. The parish council continues to receive payments from South Norfolk District Council for every tonne of recyclable material collected and most of this money has been used to help pay for new equipment on the playing field.
Denton Community Composting
The Denton Community Composting scheme has been running eight years. It was the first to be set up in Norfolk. Garden waste is collected from participating households on a weekly basis, taken to a site in Darrow Green Road and turned into compost. The scheme is primarily aimed at those with smaller gardens who find it difficult to make room for their own compost bins.
For those who are new to the village and might like to participate, the scheme runs from April to October with the help of many willing volunteers who give up their time on Sundays to collect garden waste and deliver it to the composting site. Other volunteers weigh and mix the material in the compost bins, turn, sieve and then bag the finished compost ready for distribution. Most of this work is done by regular Tuesday working parties. The finished product has proved to be very popular. Volunteers are offered free bags of compost and the rest is sold to put towards the costs involved in running the scheme.
NB Users are requested to note the following:
- Each Sunday bags must be out ready for collection by 4 p.m.
- Last year some bags were far too heavy; please think of the volunteers and do not overfill the bags.
- Grass cuttings are very heavy, as are weeds and soil.
- Grass cuttings should not be left bagged up for more than a week; so put them out as soon as they are cut and not leave them for several weeks, as has been known in the past. They are so difficult to compost once they have reduced to a dark, soggy lump!
- Please bag grass cuttings, weeds and shrubby material in separate bags. This helps the volunteers and makes a huge difference when weighing the material and mixing in the bins.
- Finally please, please DO NOT mix pernicious weeds such as ground elder, mare's tail, couch grass, thistles, nettles etc with other weeds. We will take and deal with these plants but they must be bagged separately and clearly marked.
- If you need more bags please let us know.

Extra volunteers are always welcome. If more people could spare just one or two hours a month, it would help to spread the load. It really is a case of many hands making light work, and it can even be quite fun!
Each year the scheme raises several hundred pounds for village funds. This has helped numerous projects in the village including painting the chapel and improving the playing field, so it is definitely a very worthwhile community service. It has also won several awards and similar schemes are now operating in other Norfolk villages.
If you can help in any way, or would like further information, please contact Liz Cargill, 788862.
